75MGD Transmission Conduits – Geren Island Phase 1

In the late 1990’s the city of Salem experienced flooding and resulting water shortages that made the improvements to the existing water system a priority. This project was part of the Mutual Agreement and Order (MAO) between the City of Salem and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) designed to add 75 million gallons per day of potable water that is sent to Salem’s water distribution system.

This extremely challenging project consisted of installation of 4,100 linear feet of parallel 69-inch concrete encased welded steel pipe in 40-foot joints (approximately 8,200 feet total) crossing the North Santiam River and Santiam Water Control District’s by-pass channel. The project also included construction of concrete flowmeters, chemical feed vaults, pressure sensors, 54-inch butterfly valves, and appurtenances.
